Marion County is recognized as one of four ideal spots in the entire world for raising horses; indeed the area boasts a greater concentration of a variety of horses than any place else in the United States. Thoroughbreds predominate, but the county is also strongly represented by a continually growing number of other breeds.
Both Spectators and contestants flock to the area for national caliber shows such as the Horse Shows in the Sun series (February - mid March), Ocala Breeders' Sales Race Day (March), Live Oak Combined Driving Event (March) and the Sunshine State Games Equestrian Classic (April), to mention only a few. In addition, numerous shows, roping rodeos, competitive trail rides and Thoroughbred horse sales are held year-round. North Central Florida also offers hundreds of miles of scenic natural trails for riding enthusiasts.
